(a) Offense defined. - Whoever except in the cases provided for by sub-section (2) commits rape, shall be punished with rigorous imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than ten years and which may extend to imprisonment for life, or with fine, or with both, or such imprisonment as may extend to five years, or with fine, or with both, or with such fine and such imprisonment or with such fine and such imprisonment, or with such fine and such imprisonment and such fine as the court may decide to be fit in the circumstances of the case. 2.
